Mayville honors fallen soldier with wreath-laying ceremony

MAYVILLE — The residents of Mayville laid a wreath in honor of fallen soldier David Johnson Friday afternoon.

Johnson, a 24-year-old First Lieutenant in the Army, was killed Wednesday while serving in Afghanistan. Johnson was from just outside of Mayville, and had been serving in Afghanistan for just five weeks.

Friday’s wreath-laying ceremony was organized at the last minute, but word got out quickly in the small city of Mayville.  More than 100 attended the ceremony at the city’s War Memorial.

Johnson’s pastor led the crowd in prayer.  Before leaving for Afghanistan, Johnson had talked with his pastor about his upcoming deployment.

“He said, “Pastor, I’m not afraid.  I’m not afraid to die.  I’m not afraid to go to this assignment,” said Pastor David Koch.

A choir from Mayville High School sang the National Anthem at the ceremony, and young men recited the Boy Scout Pledge.  Johnson was an Eagle Scout.

Wisconsin Mining Assoc. urges Senate to back mining bill

MADISON — The Wisconsin Mining Association (WMA) is urging the state Senate to follow the Assembly’s example and pass a bill which regulates permitting and operations of iron mining in Wisconsin. Assembly passage of the bill came Thursday evening.

In a news release issued early Friday afternoon, the WMA issued the following statement…

Mayville soldier dies while serving in Afghanistan

MAYVILLE — Mayville is remembering David Johnson, a 24-year-old First Lieutenant in the Army who was killed Wednesday while serving in Afghanistan. Johnson was from just outside of Mayville, and had been serving in Afghanistan for just five weeks.

Red, blue and a spot of yellow are the colors surrounding Johnson’s childhood home. Down the hill and across the street, neighbor James Qualmann says he heard the news on the radio. “Just kind of shocking. I thought right away it had to be our neighbor. Very hard for the family, I’m sure,” Qualmann said. Qualmann has lowered his flag to half staff in Johnson’s honor.

State Assembly set to take up mining bill

MADISON (AP) — The state Assembly is set to take up a contentious bill that would streamline Wisconsin’s mining permit process.

The Republican measure is designed to help Gogebic Taconite open an iron mine just south of Lake Superior. The company has promised the project will create hundreds of jobs, but environmentalists fear the mine would pollute one of the most pristine areas in the state.

Gov. Scott Walker called on the Legislature to pass the measure during his State of the State address Wednesday night. The Assembly is set to take up the bill Thursday. Republicans control the Assembly, making passage all but certain.

It’s unclear whether the legislation has enough support to pass the Senate, though. Republicans hold only a one-vote majority in that house.
